MIS 320 - Technical Communication

During this course I learned about the different aspects of effective technical communication. For example, I discovered how to properly identify an audience for a written technical document or instructions, and how to use effective document design techniques to clarify the message. The difference between print and Web-based document design was a major component of this course also. In addition, I learned how to write effective instructions on technical subjects.

The final course project was to write a Request for Proposal (RFP), and then compile research to write a response to an RFP. I choose to write my RFP on a skin-care company, Naturals, Inc., that was seeking a new visual identity program that would incorporate their new men only skin-care line with their existing women's skin-care line. For the RFP response, I researched, and wrote the proposal as if I were from a marketing firm called Get Noticed Marketing. I chose to build a comprehensive Website proposal for an imaginary fast food restaurant I called Nu Nosh.

The course project included a completed Website proposal for my chosen company, and a powerpoint presentation that were both to be directed at a loan officer. In addition, I created an HTML promotional email to announce the arrival of the Nu Nosh Website.

The final project for this course was a group ecommerce business plan, where each team member was elected to fulfill the role of CEO, CMO, CFO, or CIO by the other members of the team. We researched areas of concern from our perspective roles (I was elected CEO) throughout the course.

The culmination of the course was a completed ecommerce business plan, and PowerPoint presentation we produced for Homestyle Lending, a new online mortgage lender. In addition, we were required to construct a simple Web page from which our classmates could access our PowerPoint presentation, and learn more about our proposed company.

In this course I learned how to use the creative process to apply the fundamental elements of graphic design (visual hierarchy, rhythm, unity, balance, emphasis, value, alignment, color, texture, layout, typography, etc.) to visually communicate a message to an intended audience in both a traditional, and digital format.

The course project consisted of a promotional poster for a poet or author of my choice, which incorporated the design principles I learned in the course, and a logo I designed for my chosen author/poet. My poster promotes a poetry reading with the former poet and author, Anne Sexton.
